Early Life and Background

Gage Blevins, known professionally as 12Gage, was born and raised in the heart of Florida’s Forgotten Coast, splitting his early years between Apalachicola and Eastpoint. Growing up in the culturally rich yet economically challenged Panhandle, Blevins was shaped by an eclectic mix of music—from the hard-hitting energy of rap and metal to the soulful guitar work of Eric Clapton and the raw storytelling of Warren Zevon.

His formal education at Gulf Coast State College in Music Production, Music Education, and Radio Production Technology laid the groundwork for his deep understanding of composition, performance, and sound engineering. In 2004, he picked up the guitar—a moment that would ignite a lifelong journey in music.

However, his life took a devastating turn in 2018 when Hurricane Michael swept through Panama City, destroying everything he had built. Rather than breaking him, the disaster reinforced his resilience, pushing him to pour his emotions into his craft and rebuild his career from the ground up.

Early Career & Florida Roots

Blevins quickly became a prominent figure in the Florida blues circuit, hosting legendary jam sessions in Panama City that became a magnet for local and touring musicians. His ability to bring artists together solidified his reputation not just as a performer, but as a community builder.

His growing presence led to performances at major regional events, including Garnet Key Ceremonies and Chamber of Commerce gatherings, and soon, he was touring across the Florida Panhandle, playing everything from intimate clubs to full-scale festivals.

Breakthrough: Crossroads Guitar Festival & 12Gage Records

In 2019, Blevins won the Eric Clapton Crossroads Guitar Festival Contest, a defining moment that propelled his career into the national spotlight. His winning submission—produced and recorded entirely in his home studio—showcased his raw talent and deep musical insight.

This recognition led to the creation of 12Gage Records, his independent label dedicated to authentic, boundary-pushing blues and Americana. Under this label, Blevins released a string of acclaimed albums, including:

  • No Gifts Accepted
  • Baron of the Blues
  • Compensatory Entanglement
  • Dems Blues [Crash Demo]
  • Heroes Often Fail

His song “Sinners Saved” became a breakout streaming hit, resonating deeply with listeners through its spiritual themes. Another fan favorite, “Licked By A Stranger”, drew inspiration from Warren Zevon’s unfinished works, blending humor and melancholy in signature Zevon fashion.

Musical Evolution & Unique Approach

After the BP Oil Spill, which devastated much of Florida’s Gulf Coast, Blevins took a brief hiatus from performing to expand his musical vocabulary. During this period, he taught himself a staggering range of instruments, including bass, harmonica, piano, organ, lap steel, drums, percussion, mandolin, and ukulele.

Seeking a fresh perspective, he even retrained himself to play left-handed, an experiment that deeply influenced his approach to music theory and composition. This unorthodox method reinforced his ability to hear and interpret music in ways few others could.

Live Collaborations & Blues Cruise

Blevins’s reputation as a fearless improviser and electric live performer led to collaborations with industry legends. During his time performing on Blues Cruises, he played alongside a diverse lineup of musicians, even recording an album with a backing band in San Diego.

One of the highlights of his career came when he was backed by an ensemble featuring members of Los Lobos and War—a moment that underscored his growing influence in the contemporary blues world.

Musical Style and Influences

Blevins’s music is an evocative fusion of blues, rock, and Americana, often described as “precisely in the right place at the right time.” His guitar work reflects the emotional depth of Eric Clapton, while his songwriting carries the poetic intensity of Leonard Cohen, the grit of Warren Zevon, and the raw edge of Tom Waits.

His ability to capture the spirit of both personal and collective experiences makes his music deeply relatable, drawing listeners into vivid stories woven through rich, soulful melodies.

Over the years, Blevins has formed long-standing friendships with blues icons, including Elvin Bishop, Keb’ Mo’, Buckwheat Zydeco, and Theodis Ealy, further cementing his place in the blues community.

Notable Moments & Personal Life

One of the most profound moments of Blevins’s career came after a show in Apalachicola, when an audience member—a man returning home to spend his final days battling cancer—approached him and said:

“You played my life.”

The man had stood outside listening, transported by Blevins’s music to memories of his youth, his working years, and his travels. It was a stark reminder of the power of music—not just as entertainment, but as a force that connects people across time and circumstance.

The COVID Caster & Frontline Service

In 2020, during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, Blevins put his music career on hold to serve as an EMT deployed by FEMA in New York City. The experience profoundly shaped him, leading him to build a custom Stratocaster—dubbed the “COVID Caster”—as a tribute to frontline workers and the spirit of service. Outside of music, Blevins is a martial artist, gamer, creative writer, and anime enthusiast, passions that add yet another layer to his multifaceted personality.
